Palm had about a 1 yr window to do this. And they haven’t. Andriod is that player now. They’ll squeeze out a few more subscribers here and there once they can distribute their devices on other networks (Verizon comes to mind), but unless they have a complete shift in their current strategy, they won’t stand a chance at this current rate.

It would be a shame to see the Sun Microsystems Syndrome (great at technology, poor at everything else) inflict Palm.

Given that Apple is already doing so well catering to this mass audience by promoting what end users care about, maybe Palm’s best angle of attack on the problem is to go after developers by emphasizing open standards.

The thing about “developers, developers, developers” is that it’s not just about winning hearts and minds (appealing to their high regard for open standards or making it easy for them to get started, respectively). That will only lead to insubstantial, low-quality consumer applications. Palm has to find a way to get developers on board by appealing to their sense of greed: make them dream of dollar signs.

Anyway, you have a great point. In such a big market there is plenty of room for a niche player to come in and establish a beachhead, and Palm should try to get this narrow group of people excited.
